About Amavasya Tarpan

Amavasya Tarpan is a sacred Vedic ritual performed on every Amavasya (New Moon) to offer water (Tarpan) and prayers to departed ancestors (Pitrs), seeking their blessings for the family's peace, prosperity, and well-being. In Hindu tradition, Amavasya is considered an especially auspicious day for remembering ancestors. During the ritual, water mixed with black sesame seeds (Til) is offered while chanting Vedic mantras dedicated to the Pitrs. Amavasya Tarpan is performed as an act of gratitude, remembrance, and respect, acknowledging the contribution of previous generations and praying for their spiritual peace. It also reminds family members of their responsibilities toward preserving family values and traditions. The ceremony generally includes Ganesh Puja, Sankalp, Vishnu Puja, Pitru Tarpan, Pitru Prarthana, and concluding Aarti. Depending on family tradition, additional prayers or charitable acts may also be included. The ritual can be performed at home, near a river, lake, pond, temple, or another suitable location under the guidance of an experienced Vedic Pandit.
