Introduction
Havan, also called Homam in some traditions, is a fire-based Hindu ritual in which offerings are made into a sacred fire along with mantra recitation. Families may include Havan in Griha Pravesh, Vastu Shanti, Ganesh Puja, Navgraha Puja and other ceremonies.
What Is Havan?
Havan is performed using a Havan kund or suitable ritual fire arrangement. The Pandit guides the mantras, offerings and sequence. Different ceremonies have different purposes and materials, so it is better to identify the specific Puja before preparing the samagri.
When Families Perform Havan at Home
Havan may be performed during a new-home ceremony, festival Puja, religious milestone or family observance. It can also be part of a larger Puja package. The selected ceremony should determine the required materials and procedure.
Preparing the Space
Choose a clean, stable and adequately ventilated area. Keep flammable objects, curtains and loose decorations away from the fire. Ensure children are supervised and that family members can sit safely around the Havan kund.
Common Havan Samagri
Common materials may include Havan samagri, ghee, wood or approved fuel material, herbs, grains and other offerings. The exact list varies by ceremony. Ask the Pandit for a service-specific list rather than purchasing an unnecessarily large collection of items.
How the Ceremony Works
The Pandit generally begins with preparation and sankalp, followed by the relevant deity worship and mantra recitation. Offerings are made into the Havan fire at appropriate points. The ceremony concludes with prayers and aarti according to the chosen tradition.
Havan Safety at Home
Safety should be treated as part of the preparation. Keep adequate ventilation, place the Havan kund on a stable heat-resistant surface, keep water or suitable fire-safety provisions accessible and supervise children. Follow the Pandit's instructions throughout.
